Why Draft’s website is mostly text

People sometimes remark on our website being “all text,” and so after a decade-plus we have finally groaned and offered this explanation. After all, we’re a design consultancy, right?

First, we’re more of the “makes it work” sort of design than the “makes it pretty” sort of design. We can make it pretty – in fact, we think this website is pretty – but that’s not why you’re working with us.

Next, we want the website to act as an exemplar of what to expect when you hire us. Above all, we write. And so we seek clients who read. This does not describe everyone, especially in 2026. If you aren’t reading our website, then how can we expect you to read our welcome packet, contract, or research reports?

Finally, our remit is global and sometimes highly nomadic. Images are usually the biggest contributor to a high page weight. It makes sense to pare them back when you never know what kind of internet connection someone may be on. One of our clients once hired us from a satellite uplink on a boat. Another lived in rural Thailand. A third lived in rural America, which of course has worse internet than rural Thailand or a boat. As a result, we use as few images and as little JavaScript as possible. Most of our page weight comes from fonts now, if you can believe it.
